So You’re Starting a Podcast—Now What?
Look at you—mic in hand, dreams in heart, and a podcast name that’s probably a pun. I’m proud of you already! But before you launch your new audio baby into the world, let’s make sure you’re set up for success (and not just talking into the void like your last relationship).
Step 1: Name That Podcast
Your podcast name should say something about the vibe, the theme—or at the very least—make people curious enough to click. Bonus points if it sounds good shouted dramatically in a trailer voice.
Need inspiration? Try these, but first check the Intarwebs for names that have been taken:
"Laugh Lines & Landmines" – comedy with a side of chaos
"Mic Check, Please" – interviews with people who overshare (aka the best kind)
"This Might Get Awkward" – raw, real, and hilarious
"ANTi-Social Club" – you know I had to
"Unqualified But Loud" – the true spirit of podcasting
Step 2: Pick Your Format
Solo rambles? Co-host banter? Interviews? Man-on-the-street impressions of Nicolas Cage? Choose what suits your voice and energy. Keep it simple to start—don't launch your first episode with a 12-person roundtable and a fog machine.
Step 3: Get the Gear (But Don’t Go Broke)
You don’t need a recording studio built by Elon Musk. A decent USB mic, headphones, and free editing software (Audacity or GarageBand, honey) will do just fine. And record in a quiet space. I love your enthusiasm, but no one wants to hear your roommate microwave taquitos in the background.
Step 4: Record That First Episode
Don't stress about perfection. Just hit record and go. Tell people what the podcast’s about, why you’re doing it, and what they can expect. Keep it short and snappy—this is a first date, not a marriage proposal.
Step 5: Put It Out There
Upload to a podcast hosting platform (Libsyn, Buzzsprout, Podbean, Spotify for Podcasters—whatever floats your RSS feed). Then tell everyone. Shout it from the digital rooftops. Instagram! TikTok! Email your old drama teacher! (She always believed in you.)
Step 6: Keep Going
One episode is cute. Five is great. Ten? You’re officially “a podcaster.” Stay consistent, keep improving, and don’t get discouraged if your first episode gets eight downloads. We’ve all been there. One of them was probably me. You’re welcome.
Final Pep Talk
Your voice matters. Your stories matter. And honestly, we could all use a little more laughter, honesty, and bizarre tangents about 90s sitcoms in our ears. So start that podcast—and don’t forget to actually enjoy it. That’s the whole point.
And hey… save a guest spot for other up-and-coming comedians. They bring good energy and their own jokes!
